When I first contemplated moving to south Austin, I’ll admit I wasn’t very fond of the idea at all. My search for South Austin apartments almost never got off the ground. I honestly would have rather lived anywhere else. The only things I’d heard about South Austin my four years in Austin were bad things, mainly involving criminal activity. Having lived near Stassney Lane and South Congress Avenue for nearly eight months now, I can tell you I could not have been happier to be so wrong.
It is true, south Austin apartment living is like a whole different world…in a good way. Since moving into my south Austin apartment home, I’ve been able to discover a whole new side to this beautiful city of ours. No, there is not as much burnt orange down here as I was used during my glory days in West Campus, but that’s about the only complaint I have. I’ve had the opportunity to discover tons of local cuisine, most of which has quickly implanted itself among some of my all-time favorite eateries. Chain Tex-Mex restaurants give way to local and family-owned operations. Service seems like it comes with a slightly larger smile, and touch more gratitude the farther you get from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
South Austin offers a comfortable, slightly more conservative side to Austin. Everything is a little slower, and a lot less stressful. It is home to two of Austin’s Wal-Mart Supercenters; a friend to any fresh college graduate on a tight budget. The thing about many of the apartments in South Austin is their age. Within the last decade, the population of south Austin has grown exponentially, meaning many of the communities are brand new, or only a few years old. South Austin provides an affordable, modern alternative to the more expensive and slightly older mainstays of West Campus and surrounding areas.
Your South Austin apartment will have a unique ability to make you feel completely disconnected from city life, yet still be less than a 15 minute drive from the city’s hub. Being a frequenter of central Texas’ abundance of floatable rivers, leasing a South Austin rental offers an easy commute to some of our favorites, like the Blanco and Guadalupe Rivers, without moving us far away from our favorite Austin spot – the Barton Creek Greenbelt.

Living at the Block on Campus
The Block on Leon – Apartments in Austin, TX 78705
I moved into my Block apartment on Halloween of 2009. While you were out playing dress-up, I was hauling furniture around and dealing with utility companies. Once I was settled though, I really dug my new surroundings. Attractive Austin apartments can be hard to come by so I was thrilled that I scored such a sweet pad so close to the University of Texas at Austin campus. The Block has a lot of amenities and a friendly management team. My building, The Block on Leon Apartments, offers a fitness center, rooftop lounge, garage parking, and a computer lab as well as free cable, internet, and trash disposal. Every apartment has a washer/dryer, granite counters, stainless steel appliances, patios/balconies, and more. The rent is affordable and the neighborhood is great. I’m able to walk to The Drag and there are bountiful frat houses around if you’re looking to pledge. Cuatro’s is just a stone’s throw away and offers some of the best burgers and tacos in town as well as draught beer and sports on the numerous televisions. The Block also holds events for their residents that usually include free food and drinks as well as a great opportunity to mingle with your neighbors.
With that in mind, it’s not all sunshine and daisies. The apartments are on the smallish side (though my opinion might be skewed because I used to live alone in a 2 bedroom apartment) and the interior isn’t breathtaking by any stretch of the imagination. When I moved in a few of the appliances weren’t working but maintenance was up to fix them shortly afterward. The view from my balcony is great if staring at the side of a building tickles your pickle.
All things considered, though, The Block on Campus offers great West Campus apartments at an affordable price with plentiful amenities and few drawbacks. If you happen to move in, drop by my place and have a drink.
